Thoughts after Dark

I was once told a Brain
Lived up in my top,
He ran the control deck
That managed my thoughts.

His best friend the Heart
Lived a few floors below
And whenever he needed;
Heart sensed her friend’s low.

She’d go up to the deck
Scoop the Brainy right up
With her arms open wide
A hug always enough.

They worked as a team;
An inseparable pair.
A unit of one
With a single job to share.

See the brain was content
And our days were of joy
But then something happened;
His strength was destroyed.

It came on a day
Unexpected at best.
Where the confidence faded
And life was a test.

Along came a boy
Who was cuter than most
He had quite a smile
But he chose not to boast.

He humbled the others
As he gave his whole self
And I knew he was greater
Than was worth all the wealth.

The Brain saw the boy
As a logical task
When really the Heart
Wanted romance at last.

The Heart felt the love
And the brain saw a dare
And the two testified
They felt the other didn’t care.

The two saw their differences
And this boy was the root.
They no longer eye to eye’d;
And gave each the boot.

So the Brain packed his bags
And solo’d it out
While the heart found a nation
To share in her doubts.

And alone they’d compete
For this boy’s humble soul
And alone they would stand
To fill their individual holes.

The Brain was determined
With his two joining sides.
To impress this young fellow
He had nothing to hide.

He flexed and he flashed
All his wonderful thoughts
But facts weren’t what
The boy felt in his heart.

The Brain shared with him
All the knowledge to know
And the boy understood
But he wanted much more.

So he picked up his bags
And went on his way
Till he came to the Heart
Who knew just what to say.

She welcomed him in
Made him feel right at home.
And began to let out;
Emotions free to roam.

This too was too much.
The boy needed a rest.
There was so much to feel;
He no longer felt a guest.

Once more he packed up
And went on his way
And found himself confused
On exactly what to say.

The lonely surrounded him
With thoughts of the world
He became a skeptic
And lost his sharp sword.

When the heart wouldn’t listen
he cursed those who tried.
For he felt so much pain
and he started to cry.

And he cried till he couldn’t
And gave a loud rawr
Because logic was gone
Who held half of that sword.

With Heart not around
Who cared if he knew?
And the Brain wasn’t there
To be his lean-to.

But the hunger was constant!
He began begging for food
But what here was needed?
For what could subdue?

The pain here was winning,
The monster underneath;
Was poking at the fire
That never seemed to cease.

“I thought I could guard them;
The Heart and the Brain.”
And then there was silence.
“OH! I sparked the flame!”

“For the body is one
And no part is the best.
We work as a team,
There is no real contest.”

With the logic as support
And the heart with its feel
There really wasn’t anything
That these two couldn’t deal.

I thought I could spot it
Three plus miles away
But the monster knows how
And which way to sway.

He searched out the monster
That destroyed this fine pair,
The Heart and the Brain
Who seemed not to care.

He picked up each half
Of the sword that fine day
And he stuck them together
And fought for his say.

The battle was gruesome,
Smell of death all around.
The final stab was taken;
The monster left to be found.

The boy picked up the bloody sword;
He watched, just standing there.
The clock had struck it’s final beat,
Soul throbbing midst the air.

And back they came, the two at last
Their hearts were all a glow.
The boy had fought a brutal fight
In hopes that they would know,

That all in all we come as one,
Our gifts lie in our core
To give all of what we have
To help each other soar.
